Ghana's farmers desperately needed a solution to curb the staggering 50% spoilage rates of yams during transit and salvage their vital contributions to the nation's economy

Ghana, Africa

Ghana's agricultural sector, particularly yam cultivation, played a crucial role in the nation's economy. However, a significant challenge arose from the outdated storage methods used during yam transportation, leading to over 50% spoilage rates. The goal was to address this issue and minimize yam spoilage, positively impacting Ghana's farming community.

Traditional storage methods during yam transportation in Ghana resulted in high spoilage rates due to inadequate monitoring of environmental conditions. Yams are sensitive to factors like temperature, humidity, and air circulation, making it difficult for farmers to assess their condition during transit, leading to financial losses.

a. GPS Tracking Devices: Deployed in Yam transport vehicles to enable real-time tracking of their locations during transit.

b. In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems: Equipped with sensors to measure crucial environmental parameters like temperature and humidity inside the storage compartments. The data was relayed in real-time to a central control hub.

c. Cloud-Based Data Platform: Collected data from GPS and in-vehicle monitoring systems were securely transmitted and stored on a cloud-based platform. This facilitated comprehensive analysis and reporting, accessible via a user-friendly interface.

d. Alerts and Notifications: Latium's system generated instant alerts and notifications if any deviations from optimal storage conditions occurred, allowing farmers and transporters to take immediate corrective actions.

a. Reduced Spoilage: Real-time monitoring significantly reduced spoilage rates by enabling timely actions to prevent yam spoilage during transit.

b. Increased Profits: Lower spoilage led to reduced financial losses for farmers, while improved yam quality resulted in higher prices in the market, boosting profits.

c. Enhanced Supply Chain Efficiency: Real-time data streamlined the supply chain process, improving inventory management and reducing wastage at various stages.

d. Empowerment of Farmers: Latium's solution provided actionable insights, giving farmers greater control over their produce during transit, increasing their confidence and trust in the agricultural sector's efficiency.
